Thesis Blog - Week 9
March 25th
46 Days until Showcase
This week I felt the pressure. I’m not sure if it was the paper details during class, my script breaking, or being on the verge of April. There were many things that went wrong but also some big wins including getting my primary voiceover recorded.
The first big win is I have secured my room! It also took a lot of cleaning time but I have it. I brought lots of items to setup as well. I brought my projector to do some initial tests and the equipment to start running the experience.
The projection looks good but I’ll need a shorter throw projector. I tested it with my personal Epson 1060 projector. The throw ration is about 1.0-1.2 so looking at anything in the .6-.8 throw ratio should be good If I want to do something on the walls like show the kitchen frame. I doubt I’ll be able to procure something through the equipment room given the limited supply and short timeframe. The lighting is great, there is plenty of space. I had to move lots of books but there are still some large items like whiteboards and shelving to move to a temporary location.
I also tested some speakers I had that will play audio for the audience and host. I settled on a nice flat black innovox speaker, I saved from the work ewaste bin. It has a fuller sound and receded into the dark easily without being too distracting.
Other big wins to stay motivated, I recorded my voiceover with Helen for my fish Billy! She was phenomenal and I have all the Billy and William voiceover parts for every scene which is about 80% of the show. We did a remote session in one hour over zoom. The recorded file was sent as one long take in .WAV format. I used logic to create multiple “takes” for repeated sections and could mend together the best versions. I’m now going to start matching each scene with the appropriate media and refine timings. I’m just trying to move forward as of right now. And make progress. The past two weeks have felt small in terms of progress and it feels demotivating. The next big bumps visually will be having each scene work on it’s own.
